Geometries of Shadow

Can an old stable be transformed into a swimming pool? Apparently, between Noto and Modica, yes. It just takes a shift in perspective, creating an unexpected relationship of reflections between rectangles of blue, sky, and water. This involves moving the horizon line through what may seem like a simple intervention: removing the roof of an old building, exposing it. A methodical operation of subtraction, which led us—together with Sebastiano Italia and Andrea Di Franco—to maintain the perimeter volume intact, now statically reinforced and equipped with new openings designed to allow for greater solar exposure. Full-height access portals compel the space to become something else, to engage in a dialogue with sharp geometries of light and shadow, becoming permeable. Inside and outside, closed and open together. And while the language clearly leans toward contemporary abstraction, creating a space with a metaphysical flavor, the swimming pool remains one of the elements of integration with the surroundings, preserving a local grammar that respects the context and its materials.
