In the historic district of Macao, an exhibition space has been created to honor the artists of the 19th century. This is “Indipendenza Roma,” whose name refers not only to the square where it is located. Indipendenza represents the force that drives the project to exhibit art unconventionally: an apartment with richly frescoed vaults and colorful floors, where international artists not only display their works but also work and stay during the exhibition period. The intervention is almost a restoration, aimed at preserving as much as possible, including the old wallpapers. Where recovery was not possible, the walls and internal divisions have been stripped of decorations: a white band that allows the eye to appreciate each individual painting or installation in contrast to the surrounding atmosphere.
